Why It’s Important To Do What You Want

This week’s post is going to be slightly different than usual.

This week I’ve had multiple big decisions that I had to make mainly ones that involved several other people.

In these cases, it can be easy to let other people’s interests and feelings blind you and back you into a corner. Although you can rationalize why that corner is actually a good decision (as it is what your friends/family want), it really should not be considered unless you are actually indifferent.

You, and only you, are going to look after what you truly want.

Only after you have figured out what you want, then can you attempt to allow yourself to help others. This can seem selfish to some readers, and yes I agree, but it is important to be self-interested. It is also important to balance selflessness and selfishness as you cannot give unless you have and you do not have unless you do not give it all away.

These insights were ones that I had to use this past week and although I didn’t always feel amazing about my decisions (as some people had to get left out or did not get exactly what they wanted), I knew that they were the best ones I could make.

Hope this helps anyone else,

David

Wealthy Like Derek Sivers

This week’s post will discuss the amazing Derek Sivers! Everybody should go check out this man’s work..

There is so much knowledge is this man’s head that I might even have to split this into 2 separate posts but let me share the first of several insights that I’ve learned through Derek.

It’s About What You Do

Life is not about what you know or how much you know about something. It always comes down to what you are actually able to execute. What you DO is more important that what or even who you know!

Say Yes (in the Beginning)

When you first start out your career you are NOT I repeat NOT in the position to be picky and turn things down. You never know what can come from saying yes. It could lead you to places beyond your wildest dreams. Do not think that you are the next greatest prodigy because you will miss out on so much opportunity.

Standard Path is For the Chumps

This one took me some time to digest but it is a very good tip for those who believe in pushing against norms in society. To best describe this principle I will use a real life example that comes to mind; let’s say that you started a job at a business and they told you normally it will take you 14 years to become a partner here. Most people will put in the time and effort and expect after 14 years to be promoted because “that’s what happens”. But this is simply what people think and is not the only path.

What Derek believes (which I do too), is that if you want to become partner just do more. Rise up quicker by taking on more responsibility and do the work of people above you in your spare time. If you take the standard path you will arrive in the standard time, if you take the advanced path you will arrive in advance.

That is all for today! If you want to catch up on another of Derek’s sayings please check out my Instagram page (@learningeveryweek) to always be up-to-date!

Wise Like Jocko Willing

The 3rd Edition of the “Wise Like” commentaries continue with SEAL Jocko Willing who I find to be extremely interesting. I highly suggest everybody look into this individual by listening to any podcast he stars in.

Here are the most important lessons I’ve documented down below:

(P.S. There are so many good ones but these are the best in my opinion)

1. Discipline Equals Freedom

Pre-schedule normal reoccurring activities to execute everything else the rest of the day. What I mean by that is, make yourself a schedule where you have certain blocks of time where you allot to habits and small events that you do consistently. For example, shower times, workout times, morning rituals, etc.

That way, you can free up the rest of your day to do whatever you want. By being disciplined and doing what you need to do every day based on your planning beforehand, you give yourself the freedom to do what you want.

2. Exposing Yourself to Darkness to See the Light

Enjoy the light by first seeing darkness. This simple saying can have massive effect on your lives. What Jocko is preaching is that for any person to realize that their situation is bright and positive they must have something to compare it to. If they have grown up in darkness, or a situation that looked bleak and negative, when you consider your current situation you will think of all the good things you do have.

This is common practice when considering what you are grateful for. If you remind yourself of all the luxuries you are surrounded with compared to what the poorest of poor have, you then realize that your situation is actually quite amazing!

3. If you want to be tougher, be tougher

This is clear and concise. If you want to get better at anything, just go out and force yourself. You will be in awe at how simple and easy it is to accomplish many of the goals you have for yourself.

4. Extreme ownership

No excuses. Take control of your life and make sh*t happen.┬áHandle┬áwhat needs to get done and now and don’t let anyone else do it for you.

Now, start implementing these ideals into your daily lives and live every day epic!

Setting Financial Goals

Setting a goal is a lot like following a diet, you need to plan ahead of time what you need to do to be successful and follow it every day without straying.

If you plan on saving up for a vacation make some calculations on how much per week you need to put away and start saving. Small amounts over long periods of time make up for more than you think.

And if you don’t have the income necessary or you don’t have any income at all, the plan will be longer but you can still make that plan. However, it should start with the steps needed to acquire the skills and capabilities of a job you wish to obtain. Value offering is extremely important in this case.

But lets once again imagine you want to go away for a one week vacation in the tropics. If you start saving 4 months ahead of time instead of 4 weeks, obviously, you will need to save less per week and that’s idea.

Put away small amounts so that it doesn’t interfere with your normal expenses. If you can’t spare any extra money to save consider cutting out one or two meals out, ideas like this can save you enough to be putting aside for the vacation.

Trust me, once you’re at the end goal it feels a lot better to spend that money debt free than to have to put it all on a card. You almost feel like you’re getting an all-expense paid trip depending on the lavishness of it of course.

So remember, plan ahead, start early and commit to the plan.

Hope this helps!

Scenario Planning

What is Scenario Planning

Scenario Planning is a process I use pretty often. I personally use it for my goals but its main use is actually for making business plans.

It’s important to understand that the world has many uncertainties in it and it’s impossible to plan and account for everything that can happen in the future. What we can do is make the best possible plan for most scenarios.

What this means is that we have to come up with as many different scenarios possible and use the plan that will be successful to an extent in the most of them.

How do we go about doing this?

1) First we need to think of what the issue is. What is the goal that we are trying to achieve and what are the possible external threats or opportunities to that goal.

2) Then we must, to our best ability, figure out which one of these external forces can be predetermined. This refers to something that is pretty much predictable.

3) For the remaining external forces we need to identify which are must crucial and will have the biggest effect on this goal.

4) Lastly, we look at all scenarios of these forces in the future and pick the strategy or plan that will allow us to be successful most often.

Once we implement the strategy in our lives we also need to look out for first signs of something going wrong. This means that if we see that a certain driver or force is turning out one way and we need to change our plan, we must do it as soon as possible.

Hope this helps!
